As someone pursuing a career in psychology, the idea of mental health and its impact over the course of history has greatly interested me. Mental health and mental illness has gone through many theories for its cause, from supernatural, somatogenic, or psychogenic (Farreras, n.d.). The blame of demonic presences, hysteria, to biological processes have all been seen throughout history. Asylums, though promising for the treatment of mental illness, quickly fell into disarray and abuse (Farreras, n.d.). These days mental health is far less stigmatized, but there is so much that still needs to be done. I hope to contribute to that help one day.
